Are you a member of a health & fitness club? & do you get the most out of your membership? I would be interested to hear about what clubs you are members of and why you go to them? :D

All good reasons  Do you have to pay monthly or each visit?
And tick the council option in the poll please!

I did!
i pay monthly, as a student i get a bit of discount. and to be honest the serious reason why i use it is becuase my friends go there, and its generally not full of pretentious people who love themselves. (Although you can spot a few in the free weights section). Its quite relaxed, they have a few TV's and its normally quite quiet.

im not a member of any gym- i prefer to do all my training at home on my own! ive got a treadmill, exercise bike, puchbag and multigym that i use most days- i also play a bit of squash and badminton with my cousin and go running twice a week with my best mate(havent been for 11 months due to injury but starting again soon)
i occasionally go to my local gym to use the rowing machines but not worth me getting a gym membership as i have everything i need at home!

No, i don't take advantage of her services yet. I may do though. She does lend a hand if you ask, but i've not have a full programme worked out. :D

paul can you offer any advice into starting training again after a long lay off due to injury? ive been doing a little bit on the exercise bike/weights etc but obviously ive been fairly limited to the amount and intensity i could do due to my knee. just been for a half hour run for the first time in ten months- my knee seemed to hold out quite well but my legs are really sore now. I always warm up and cool down properly. i was thinking to start with i'd just do 2 mile runs every other day with a bit of weight training and on the day inbetween do a session on the exercise bike and a couple of sessions on the punchbag- then gradually build up to longer runs (i was doing 4-6 miles when i was fit before i hurt my knee)
any suggestions would be great
thanks

I'm no expert (as you will know) but does running not put a bit too much impact/strain on your knee?

OK Craig, You don't want to damage the knee again, right? Have you been doing any physio?
I would recommend build the quads & Hamstrings as those muscles help to stabalise the knee joint. Leg curls & leg extension exercise will work those muscles.
Running is a high impact activity. I would suggest non impact sports before getting heavily back into running. Cycling, X trainner or rowing are all good options.
The main thing is listen to your body and come back gradually.
I hope this helps.

yes it does- that's why i've had to wait until 3 months after the operation till i could run (3 months being today:D )ive been attending physio during those 3 months to try and get a full range of movement back into the knee, and to build up my quads and hams using an exercise bike, rowing machine, trampoline and by doing leg extensions and curls (which ive also been doing at home on my gym). I can't start playing badminton and squash for at least another month as this puts even more stress on the ACL,but when i do start my 15 year old cousin is ready and raring to show me how its done (he plays at county level) and i cant race or play football till october.
just wondered if you had any advice to get me gradually back into a full training program- i have been cleared to run otherwise i wouldnt have even considered it (its a huge relief now i can as i think i was getting pretty unfit)

Wow, that all sounds intensive. Obviously you've already considered most of it. I was just thinking along the lines of a substitute to running like cycling or x training. I know that people with good knees often have problems when road running.
Good luck with that #24, i know you've been waiting so long now. It'll be great for you to get back out on the track. Just don't get too excited and do the same thing again!

cheers! +yeh thats what ive been doing for the past month and a half (cycling instead of running because less intensive) im starting off running on a treadmill incase i have any problems (so i dont get stuck miles awasy from home unable to walk-that happened before i had the op- my dad had to come and pick me up on my RM, i was about 4 miles from home down a lane that you cant get a car down!) and i always go down the lanes when i run outside- dont like road running.
and i will try not to get too excited when i start riding again, i think ill enjoy it more than ever with the amount of time ive had away from it- it'll be like starting all over again! longest ive ever had off the bike before this was 4 months with my compound fracture of my right arm.
we'll have to organise a forum track day some time over the winter- think im just gonna use my mates track for the first month or so before i go back to a proper track.

I go to Fitness First - reasons for this are (in no particular order):
- it's reasonably good value (£32 a month)
- it's near where I live
- it's a lot less busy than the leisure centre near me (which is really well equipped, but is packed all the time!!)
- I travel a fair bit with work, involving a few overnight stays - with FF I can train at almost all of their gyms nationwide (with the exception of a few in London) - so I can train when I'm away, and don't have to pay to do so.
Works well for me, and been a member there about 8 years I think.
