Apparently, you have to either wheelie for the entire lenght of the start straight so it release's or bottom them out over a big jump and the catch moves....simple really:rolleyes:

as far as i can see them, they are made to spring back up after the 1st bump, well the 1st bump is teh gate, so they will push the front up straihgt away causing a bigger wheely, so to speak. a friend of mine had 1 on his kx250f and said it was rubbish, and isnt getting one on his crf250. I have a 125 and just use teh clutch in the right mannor and it goes pretty well off the gate. Down to reactions at the end of the day!

Ah....glasshopper....now we gettin somwear....ah..sole...;)

I believe I will get the holeshot, sometimes I might think..sh*t look who's on the line, but even the remidies walkaway leader Kurt Brain dosent phase me, on the 125 against his 450 I nearly had him, now back on the 250f I dont believe he will get there b4 me, trouble with this weekend is the start is not a fair gate, so if your peg is crap your start is not likley to be the best:rolleyes:

There was a big discussion on Adtrip about these holeshot devices a couple of years back and how they move the centre of gravity down and forward to help with starts.

I did the maths and it did move it - 0.1%.

I was at Crick about a month back and a guy had one there in the Junior B group. Clicked Holeshot device into place, 15 second board went up, gate dropped and he just sat there - waited til everyone else had got half way up the start straight and then he set off at Driving Miss Daisy speed   - what a waste of £60 (or however much they are!)

I've personally never used one - I can never compress the forks enough to engage it without falling off the bike as I'm trying to do it!

I remember hollywood senior saying that, and all I thought was I must be crap at starts then cos I truely believed i was going to get it!

As far as Holeshot devices go, I'll go against the trend as I think they make sense. Add the unsprung weight of the front wheel etc to the front of the bike(without the forks having to go to full extension), and lower the C of G, to keep the nose down as you take off.
The cost compared to £40 for a billet aluminium blah blah blah that does nothing isn't too bad either (if you're that way inclined), and I'm not.:D

They won't make a bad starter good, but i would have thought like for like they would lead to an improvement, but I have just been to the pub!

MX

well i recently put a holeshot device on after a couple of races at the start of the season when i was wheelying when i fitted it i was getting average starts then at ballykelly it didnt release at first corner shortly after it threw me over the bars the pin broke out of the holeshot device. and i was out injured for 2 weeks went 2 desetmartin with no holeshot device and holeshotted first race so i dont think they make that much difference if u use a good technique.

IMO... more important than these fan dangled new devices is getting your start rut prepared ready for your impending Holeshot...:D

i have used a holeshot device for the last 2 years and can honestly say they do help, but i will say they are a small percentage of getting a good start.

good tyre
well prapared rut
watching the previous start
gate choice
clutch control
technique
WANTING IT!!

the above are just as important!!:)

I have never felt the need for one , if you're wheelying then get your weight over the front more .
Motocrossers could do with going to a few speedway meetings and watching those boys out of the gate for some tips .

Ha ha! I have seen your start technique and this picture is very good at hiding the truth. You see, you may be "preparing your gate" but what you aren't revealing is that the real secret is in the choice of gate. See everyone has a fence behind them or a tent thingy, you however appear to have chosen the only gate with nothing behind it. This is because you are going to exercise the same technique you use at UMX rounds by starting 30 foot behind everyone else and the gate!

In reality when the 15 second board is raised your bike will be out of shot of the camera, way way way over to the left! :)

Factory Les
1st June 2007, 10:56 AM
Not quite 30 foot, but it's a point well-made!!

Look right at the far side of the start gate and you can just about see Ady a bike length or so behind the rest!

And then the resulting 'jump' on the rest of the field!

Although rumour has it his good starts are more to do with the fact that he's now a bit too old, and his eyesight's gone a bit - I don't think they do bi-focal goggle lenses yet mate

You only have to look at the rutt in from of the bike, the one his front wheel is in to see that he is clearly setting up his rutt with the front wheel in the palce the last persons rear wheel started in :)
