Thanks for your replies guys. I am a firm believer in a regular assessment to keep a track of improvements and often they can be used as a motivational tool.

What do you think is involved in a fitness assessment?

& How much do you feel would be a fair price for a test?

Definately a motivation tool. I see a personnel trainer every 4 weeks for a weigh in and fat %, and without a doubt I am more desciplined as I don't what to let her or myself down. I have a deadline which without I could and would think "oh well next week". I know a lot about weight training, more than most of the "personnel Trainers" in the gym, and therefore shied away from a personnel trainer. But the women I see has so much knowledge and experience, plus she see's things I don't and more objectively, and guides me.

I would think a fitness test would involve heartrate monitoring during a gradual raise in cardio output, then monitoring of recovery rate, ect.

How much? no idea!!

Thanks, Again some good points raised. i'll refrain from too much comment here as I don't want to influence peoples replies as i'd like to gauge their perception of this subject.

What does a session with a personal trainer cost in you area Paul?

Well I get mine cheap £20 for 1 1/2 hrs session. Its done in the trainers converted garage, she can't work in a gym anymore due to have three or four vertibrae fused and braced, so she's freelance. She's very very good, and the results have been amazing. I have been training for about seven years, started at around 19 stone:eek: dropped to 16.5 but could not get below that. Went to see her after christmas and dropped to 14,10 in 9 months. No loss of strength and now encreasing mass.

I think she's upped her rates to £25 for everyone but me and the wife :D We are her favorites.

But at the local gym I think they charge about £30-£40 and hour.

And I'm I right in saying that's for a PT session rather than a specific fitness assessment?

Yes.

I do think they do a fitness assessment in the gym, but I've seen them do it and it looks very basic. It seems more to check if someone is fit enough to train, as apposed to a level of fitness and tracking improvements.

I don't think it would be beneficial to us, my son's only 12. I think he gets enough exercise and keep fit by walking to and from school and playing rugby etc. These questions were probably intended for the adults rather than school kids though :o

I feel for my son, time on the bike is the best form of training.

Thats a good point #55, i think this was more aimed at the adults. I'm pretty sure that Hollywood doesn't really want to get children into physical "training" as such. As you say, just being active and riding i think it the key for kids.

Saying that, there are lads as young as 15 getting into gp's now. So i don't know when you would draw the line.

Abosulutly right #55 & 28.

Fot youths, gym based training is not suitable. A "normal" active childs life is enough to keep them fit and for kids & adults alike the very best form of training is riding the bike.

So, yes this is aimed at adults. Who though their dialy life have to utilise gym's or home equipment to exercise.

A fitness assessment would, amongest other benefits give a base line for improvements and as a guide should be scheduled every 8 weeks. (IMO)

I've always taken fitness assessments at the start of my pre season training (triathlon being my sport and not MX unfortunately for me) but this was never a chargeable service, so I have no idea what someone should pay. As DR650s said it's the personal training time you pay for. If an assessment were bundled together with a training programme I,m sure there would be more value in the whole package, and it would be specific to the individuals needs. You could then offer a fitness review on a regular basis and tailor a routine based on the individuals results. The beauty with your offer it can be made specific to MX, exactly want the guys on here want.

Spot on. That is the bigger plan. To offer a decent assessment a surprising amount of equipment needs to be purchased.

I have rough plans outlined that would involve regular assessments (every 8 weeks) with specific fitness programs.

It's just the question as to wheather it's viable. :)

I said NO as I am married to a fitness instructor and she reliably informs me that my fitness is absolutely sh!t so unless 'buying' an assessment would tell me otherwise I know I have a long way to go before I am at the point where a proper assessment would do me any good :D

I would imagine that your target market would be semi to pro level racers that are in the position where they know themselves, have the time and determination and level of fitness to want a benchmark to improve on. I would guess that a lot of forum dwellers are not the above (no insults intended) as instead of reading and writing nonsense on forums we should all be out riding our bikes :D
