Default Iveco van starting problems

I've an Iveco turbo daily 2.8 and I am having a few problems with it.

I don't use it very often i.e once a week at best, and a couple of weeks ago I went to start it and it turned over fine but took about 5 secinds to fire.

I thought it was the glow plugs but I found the same thing when it was hot.

I went and started it this morning and it took more like 10 seconds of turning it over for it to fire up, upon which it seemed to be struggling to run, and then it stopped when I let the revs drop down.

Now the bloody thing won't start at all, but turns over fine.

My mate reckons there is some sort of valve that is supposed to stop the fuel running back to the tank, and if that has happened it will let air the system which is what I reckon has happened.

You chaps have any ideas???

it could be a faulty starter motor, try wacking it with a lump of wood or anything just to shake it abit. see if that does anything,if it starts, then you'l know its the starter,if it doesnt, your in no better situation

It sounds like a fuel blockage...is there a glass bowl fuel filter ?..check the brass gauze filter inside at the top of the bowl...this filter is very fine and tends to get blocked...if that is clear...replace making sure the rubber seal is in the correct place before tightening bowl

Having done that...make sure the fuel flow from the filter to the injection pump is plentiful...ie no restrictions..

then crack/loosen the injector pipes and check fuel is coming through when engine is turned over..if it is ...tighten all but one injector then turn over engine..if it starts tighten the remaining injector

The filter is just a standard screw on jobbie with a plastic drain screw thingy on the bottom

Only three thing would stop a diesel starting....Fuel - Air - Mechanical Failure (ie its completely shot)

Fuel - if fuel is arriving at the injectors - that eliminates a fuel problem

Air - if filter and induction system is clear - eliminated

*** just one other thing - if just one glow plug is faulty this would also create a start problem*** take all four out and check each one individually with a 12volt battery - put the positive lead onto connection end and negative to body of plug....the tip of each plug should glow red hot almost instantly...
