Have you just switched from two stroke to four? Or is this a problem you have not had with other four strokes?

ive just started mx, this is my first bike, not got alot of knowledge to be honest, was under the impression it would have been harder to kick when cold but is not the case, starts first or second kick cold, its just occassional this problem occurs,to be honest i dont even know if its a problem, somebody mentioned something about shims?or even a new spark plug, which i will try when i get home from offshore, but as i said i dont really know about bikes exept the basic maintenance

Fourstrokes can just be a bugga to start. I had an RMZ that just would not go when hot and the only way to get it going was to kick it over like you would a 125.

..unless its from someone trusted or you know the bikes history...the trouble with buying any bike...especially a four banger..is the engine

..my advise should you wish to take it......find a local reputable dealer/mechanic and ask to give the bike a once over...check the valve gaps ...shim...etc.

may cost you a 50 ..100 quid....but may be short change if that motor is about to go bang (800 +)

..ask to get everything back to factory settings...and then start clean sheet ..

It might be worth a quick check of the valve clearances actually, if only for peace of mind really.

As Spags has said, the Hot Start lever can sometimes jam up/not fully engage properly and this may well be all it is. It happens on most 4 strokes at one time or another - just disconnect it from the carb end and give it a good spray with WD 40 or similar, to flush any crap out (make sure you disconnect from carb first thouhg as otherwise all crap goes straight into the carb!)

And for how much it costs then it might be worth sticking a new plug in there as well.

One last thing - this isn't connected to your hot start problem at all, but a lot of lads who are new to MX don't realise they need to clean and re-oil the air filter after every ride (if you do then apologies - but it's a common problem with new riders to the sport). If this is the first you've heard of this, then have a look on this thread - towards bottom of page 1 and top of page 2 has all info you need re this.

Good luck and welcome to the forum
