General Newbie Questions on Costs (starting up/season costs)

hey this is a thread to know how much it would take to start up the sport, also not actually having experience on a bike will be much harder to get into, i am 17 and 18 in january. i am living in kent, chatham just near maidstone.

I have been looking at karting but the price is just to much for me really and wondering if this would be a safer bet to start racing. if you could all let me know on costs;

equipment, track fees, race fees, how to do it cheaper etc.. you know prob had so man threads on this but i couldnt find any. i am still looking round the thread

if you could help that would be great

Hi Sam and welcome to the 'Edge'...

Costs....well where do you begin, bike I suppose... £1000 for a reasonable 125 to start with... kit including helmet and boots for approx £275 but you could buy s/hand (but not helmet) fuel to and from meetings assuming you already have a van or trailer to get it there, fuel for bike approx 2 gallons for a meeting plus 2 stroke mix.

Be a good idea to start out by just going to local practice tracks at approx £30 for the day and if you can find someone to help out with advice on how to ride correctly that would help a lot... after you have a bit of experience then get out and race.... Entry fee approx £40 plus either a day licence about a fiver (yearly licence works out much cheaper)

Welcome Sam,
Good to hear you are considering taking up M/X. It's an adictive sport, I've been involved since 1960 and I'm still hooked! All motor racing costs a fair amount of money but apart from perhaps lawn mower racing, M/X is, or can be, one of the least costly. The thing is you don't have to have the fastest bike to have fun, it's you against the track which is the challenge. Keep in touch and let us know what you decide.
